Being a Leader

Are you a school leader?

We could make the argument that being a teacher automatically put the individual in a leadership position. But not all teachers understand their place or their role within a school system as leaders. Now, let us take this example further.

Suppose you are a school principal, would you consider yourself a leader? The answer would not be that hard to determine because being a school principal also presumes that you are in a leadership position. That is the presumption here. Listen to the audio files.

For instance, being the head of a school requires a bit of leadership skills. Whether you would admit it, being a school principal means that you are a leader. Most people would agree that the title of a school principal is also a leadership position (or it is a leadership title).

Does that mean that every school principal is a leader? Does the individual determine the daily operations of the school building itself? One might say yes!

A schooling system.

There is something else worth pointing out here. A school is only a part of a larger schooling system. It is a part of a broader entity.

A school principal has a supervisor (a school superintendent), though this is not the norm. Mostly, however, that is the way it is. Watch video files to learn more.

The superintendent himself has a supervisor (a school board). A School board itself often responds to the educational policies of the state. In the same way, these state policies often derive from national dictum. So, we are not sure who is leading the school. There is not a clear understanding who is leading his or her organization.

When we are talking about leadership in a school setting, we have to consider those limitations. There is always an entity is in a higher position than the other is and that entity is dictating the other what to do or not to do. These are important realities; these are important facts we have to take into account when we are trying to determine who is a leader within a school system or within a school setting.
